Would southern califorina be a better place live than, South Carolina. Why?

I want to retire, no drama, not in the cold, or in a big city.
I need to be near stuff like the malls and movies, hospitals, airport and stuff like that.

I never lived in those places, but I been to San Diego, I know San Diego is very nice climate, the temp stays the same pretty much all year long, but it's expensive to live there, and it has much more smog then what SC would. I know you don't want to live in a big city, but you can always check out California's statistics on living there, else fly out there and it will give to a better feel of the place that you might like to move to. What might look nice on the internet, may not be what your looking for.
