The why is unclear to me. But what strikes me about it is that this term is used in many different languages. All Germanic languages (e.g. German, dutch,...) I know use this term.
But so do all romanic languages (French, Spanish,...) I think this proves that this term is probably indeed 100's if not 1000's of years old

The origins seems really to be the word for kitty. Also in my mothers language (german) the (or rather "a") word for the female genitalia is the same as for a little kitten. Maybe it refers to its property of having a fur we (men) feel strongly inclined to pet and stroke. Think also of those river dwelling mammals which build dams and have flat tails (I don't know if one can write beaver on this site). Though the german word for this animal has no other meaning in this direction. Not that I knew at least.

I don't know but it is a very old term at least hundreds of years old - i wouldn't be surprised if it went back 1000 years.

the term is probably not that old but the method of using it in their favor is as old as dirt.
