Hello Yuna,

I will try to answer this qusetion as best as I can. More because I am managing 5 AS/400 servers for an IT company...
You ask about AS/400, but now it has a couple of other names... IBM changed the AS/400 name to iSeries about 4 years ago, and last year, changed it again to "System i" for the purpose of this email, I will refer to the it as either AS400 or as iSeries.

I will first try to impress you with some facts...:
1). iSeries is installed in over 16,000 banks worldwide
2). For the 6th consecutive year, the iSeries system won VARBusiness Midrange Server Award
3). Over 245,000 customers have installed an iSeries
- 46% in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa)
- 37% in North America
- 17% in Asia Pacific
4). Over 400,000 iSeries systems have been sold in over 100 countries around the world.
- 43% in EMEA(Europe, the Middle East and Africa)
- 40% in North America
- 17% in Asia Pacific
5). For the 8th year, the iSeries system was ranked as the #1Office Server by the Nikkei Computer Customer Satisfaction Survey
6). Computerworld Hong Kong readers have selected iSeries as the 2005 best mid-range server
7). 98% of the 2004 Fortune 100 companies have at one time purchased an iSeries system
8). 3,400+ "New" customers installed iSeries systems in 2006, does not include existing customers who also bought additional servers.
9). 80 of the Top 100 Global Retailers own an iSeries
10). 6 of the Top 10 US Super Market and Grocery Foods Chains own an iSeries
11). The iSeries family has an application portfolio of 6400+ application solutions from 2500+ ISVs(Independent Software Vendors)
12). You can Lunux on a partition on the AS400
13). Over 150,000 shipments of WebSphere Development Studio for iSeries systems to date
14). Never hacked, no reported virus

The Sydney olympics ran on the AS400. It was used for live, online updates and media clips and website.

The reason large corporates buy an AS400 is for the sheer stability, ruggedness and availability of the server.

If you asked this question because you were offered a job by an AS400 company, I suggest that you take it...!

And if you want, you can send me a mail, offline, and I might even be able to tell you smething about the company that you wanted to look at as an employer...:)
