Hello,

(ANS), Well the answer to this is abit more complex than it first appears, why? because the UK relies upon mutiple sources of gas supply.

No.1 The largest porportion of UK gas comes from several pipe lines under the Sea from Europe & Ultimately from Russia.

Politically this is a very sensitive subject as President Putin is using the supply of gas resources as a political weapon to hold other countries to ransom. Its a kind of cat & mouse game of power (Russia has the gas resources & other countries want the gas), President Putin can give or withhold the supply, example is Bilarussia at the moment & alot of wrangling over supplies to them.

No.2 LPG (liquid petroleum gas) comes in massive super tankers from the middle east, much of this from Saudi Araba and the Gulf states. The UK government signed a huge contract to supply GB no very long ago.

No.3 The UK still draws some gas from its own reserves from under the North Sea but this is winding down as the reserves are dwindling now. And are due to run out in the next 5-10 yrs.

The North Sea. It comes ashore primarily at terminals at Bacton (Norfolk), Theddlethorpe (Lincolnshire), Easington (Yorkshire), Teesside, and St Fergus (Scotland). Significant quantities also come from the Irish Sea, coming ashore primarily at the Barrow terminal. There are two pipeline interconnections with continental Europe, the volumes involved are still relatively small but are increasingly important because North Sea production is declining.

about 80-90% of the gas comes from the caspian sea now, up to about a 2 years ago it was from the North Sea however - a lack of foresight from the Government during the eighties and nineties meant that we now have the situation where we have run out of gas.

The North Sea. Increasingly this is sourced from the Norwegian and to a lesser extent the Danish sector.
