go to a local computer shop and get them to build you one to your specifications using their advice on which components would best suit your needs. that way you will end up with a machine that you will use to it's full potential eg: if you like to play the latest games then you can have a high spec graphics card, if you want to listen to music then they can reccomend a top sound card, or if you want to store a LOT of data then they can help you choose the best and biggest harddrive/s you can afford.

I would just call Dell. And tell the person exactly what you want--something that will play DVDs fast, etc--they'll be delighted to help you. I did it and got exactly what I wanted! I don't know a thing about computers and the person on the phone helped me a lot. Do you play games on your computers? Because if not, any good desktop PC will do you good if you only want one that plays music/dvds. Just make sure it has a dvd drive and a good amount of space for all your music/movies! Another alternative is to go to circuit city/best buy/fry's electronics/compUSA and ask a worker for help! I find that the workers at fry's are very helpful. Hope everything goes well.

Pretty much any new system will do what you want to do. As long as it has a DVD drive. You aren't asking a lot to play music and dvds. Make sure the PC you get has at least 512mb of memory, and a dvd drive. That's pretty much it. As long as it has those, just pick one you like the price on. Go to best buy and talk to a salesperson if you want to, just don't let them talk you into anything too pricey. You shouldn't have to spend any more than 500 bucks to get a PC to do what you want. It doesn't need to be a powerhouse. Dell, HP, or Gateway are going to be your best bets. Dells are cheapest, but tend to have some problems, Gateways and HPs are about the same and are a little more expensive, but still not bad.
Your best bet is to go with a BIG NAME BRAND, they usually have the best support and price combo.

I am not a gamer, I just wanted good internet access, music download, and CD/DVD burner, I got my Dell 15 months ago, it has not given me a moments trouble since I had it, the sales staff are knowledgable and helpful. I am contemplating a new laptop at the moment, and will use Dell again. Previous computer was Evesham, had no end of trouble with it!

I would recommend a Dell... the one advertised on TV would be a good investment since your not a gamer. You'd get a new system for about 700 bux. Hard to beat that and get quality.
