Also if I want to send e-mail back home do I have to use a local service provider or can I do this through Yahoo?

thats one way, the other way would be to directly log on to:
www.mail.yahoo.co.uk
or
www.mail.yahoo.com
and sign in
And you can directly send mail via yahoo, your local service provider only needs to ensure that yahoo is accessible for you

Just type mail.yahoo.com in internet explorer and hit enter
Than click on compose and type ur mail , put the email is whom u want to send the mail in to field and click on send , tha;s it
No u don't need any service from service provider yahoo will do it for u

just as you state , but you will have to enter your user id and password ::: e-mails you send will go through yahoo
