If you to specsavers they usually do a free contact lens trial where you get a few pairs for free and they check if your suitable for contact lenses, they will show you how to put them in. I buy the daily disposables, they cost £11 for 15 pairs, but you can get other types like the monthly ones for less than that.

I have contact lenses they feel weird once you put them in but after you blink a few times they're okay. They work fine but you just have to get the right perscription for you. Go to an eye- doctor. They range in many different prices. I'm not sure if they have symotoms and side effects though, probaly not. THEY DONT HURT, THEY JUST FEEL WEIRD.

Any decent opticians would let you have a trial, so you wouldn't have to buy any unless you wanted to. I wear daily disposables and usually get to have a 5 day trial if I am thinking about swopping the brand that I use.
