He was born in Connecticut but came to Texas with his parents when he was quite young. He was raised in Texas, mostly in Midland. Ever been to Midland? Nice West Texas city. Not very patrician by New England standards.
W in person comes across as sophisticated while trying to avoid seeming sophisticated. I found him a pleasant and intelligent conversationalist. He does better one-on-one than he does in public speaking.
I find the routine interesting and amusing and we don't hold his Connecticut birth against him. Incidentally, I am also a transplanted Texan, having been born in Chicago.

It is an image he tends to portray well. He does have roots here in Texas...for some reason people see a person in cowboy boots or a western hat and they just think that person is from Texas...I thought the stereotype would die after Dallas went off the air but I see it is still alive and rearing it's ugly head.
