A lot depends on how the surged troops are distributed.
The proposal is to use them to help control Baghdad and Anbar Province. This is where most of the insurgency is taking place. I would think it could help, depending on what the utilization plan actually is.
I don't think it will hurt. By the way, I am a retired military officer and have given this issue some attention. There are arguments pro and con, some of them on both sides by military experts.
So it could be a crapshoot, unless there is a good plan in place.
The commanders in the area seem to think it's a good idea so I think it's worth pursuing.

With the extra troops we can seal the borders with Iran & Syria(who is supplying the insurgents with arms and people) and then help the new Iraq army and police clean house. Then we can leave. Be warned what we just witnessed in Somali will happen in Iraq, time to unleash hell on the terrorist. Unshackle the TROOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only the opinion of a lot of military experts and the Iraqi government, as opposed, I'm sure, by your much greater knowledge of 4th generation warfare, counter-insurgency operations, and the situation on the ground in Iraq.

with the type of battles our children is fighting in Iraq...it will not help..it will just give more ducks, for the insurgents that are hiding behind women and children, to shoot at.......and with more troops it will prolong the fight...and possible draw in more insurgents from other countries to help in their jihad.....
god what a mess......sorry, it just makes me sick to my stomach to even think about it.....
