3 male family members of my husbands family have had or have parkinsons? Any ideas of the chances of any other males in the family getting it ? Is it just bad luck or is it heriditary?

Is Parkinson's hereditary?

There is no conclusive proof that Parkinson's is hereditary - however there does seem to be a genetic susceptibility to the disease.

People with siblings or parents who developed Parkinson's at a younger age have a higher risk of developing it themselves. This suggests it could be passed on in some families - if for example they both come into contact with other factors such as a certain kind of food, or a particular chemical or virus. In which case environmental and lifestyle factors will interact with the genetic susceptibility, to trigger the development of Parkinson's.

Relatives of people who were older when they developed the disease have the same average risk for Parkinson's as the rest of the population.

i once saw a documentary about parkinsons desease. do u know the actor who played in the movie "back to the future"? he played a school boy. so he has now parkinsons. and they showed a picture of the crew which was making some movies with him (many years ago) - half of the crew is having parkinsons now. also they showed some town in usa near some mine of smth (sorry i don't remember of what) and a very big persentage of this town population is having parkinsons. so they made a theory in this documentary that it might be through some outside factors - like poisoning with some chemical or exposing to smth not good for health. they just can't deduct to what still. i wish i could remember the name of this documentary

Unfortunately there is a hereditary pattern in Parkinson's disease where there is a deficiency of the melanin pigment of the Subtancia Nigra of the brain.

You can rest assured that it is one of the field of medical science where there are the most research going on. The medical breakthrough is not far.

It seems to be hereditary......... not just bad luck..sorry to hear that, although there is no guarantee the other males will get it, their chances are substantially better than the average persons. Genetics can sometimes be very cruel..........
