"They had the best place around!"

This means that Frank Zappa's group had the best mobile recording studio in Montreax Switzerland at the time of the first Montreax Music festival. Somebody accidently set fire, or caused a fire, that 'burnt the place to the ground'.
ALL of Zappa's band equipment was destroyed in the fire.
Nobody was actually working on an album, but the Deep Purple song relates the events of the fire that year.
Since then the festival has become known for Jazz and Blues.

<>At the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1972, so the story goes, someone set the casino on fire with a flare gun and burned it to the ground. Frank Zappa and the band had to evacuate the building during their performance and the Deep Purple song is about the fire. I guess they were expecting to get an album out of the festival perfomance.
