Popup blockers, such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars, will only stop web based popups. They can help somewhat but will do nothing to stop popups on a computer that is badly infected with trojan downloaders that are contacting other computers to download and deliver the pop up ads.

Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine, if you are getting excessive popups, or are getting popups even when you are offline.

This is the one I use (it will take some time).

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/

2. Scan for trojans, adware and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/

And after your computer is fully cleaned of spyware I would suggest IE-SPYAD to prevent further problems, if you are using IE browser:

"IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC."

And if your popups say "Messenger Service" at the top Title Bar. Read Here:

Older versions of Windows (pre XP-SP2) can get "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Messenger Service enabled by default. These type of popups will have the words "Messenger Service" up top in the title bar. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.

Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:

Good luck.

The popups you have are installed on your computer and is known as adware. Popup blockers cannot stop those. Adware is usually installed by Trojans.

I recommend you go to this site and download ewido. It is the best Trojan remover available. It is a full function 30 day trial.

Go here and download the AdAware program.

Run these two programs and delete all they find.

what are you clicking on? Usually that is a sign someone, either you or someone that uses the computer, is clicking on bad sites. You will have to find that out because if you fix it it will go right back if they continue their behaviour. I had to reformat a computer last week because someone insisted on clicking on porn. don't give into the temptation it will wreck your computer so will clickiing on some banner ads or going to sites from google like bad pics or free x box sites they will leave all sorts of hoobistank on your computer! You may need to find a restore point and use system restore. There is a program allowing these ads to come thru you probably downloaded

You probably have adware on your computer. I had the same problem a while back. You need an adware remover to get rid of it. A good free one is called Ad-Aware. You can find it at http://www.adawareresource.com/co/adawareresource/?sid=M5_0001

probably there's some adware installed on your computer which shows you those pop-ups. do they suggest you to buy something, to visit online casino or porn site? if so, you definately have adware. in this case you need an antispyware, not pop-up blocker. try spyware doctor:

try using a different browser like Firefox. It is guaranteed to block pop ups in a secure manner.

note: Using internet explorer is one of the riskiest ways to get pop ups on your computer.
