If they do a credit check and it shows you have bad credit, I know in CA they usually make you pay a larger deposit. My neighbor had bad credit and she had to pay almost double deposit. Alot of it depends on the renters rights for the area you are moving to. Try looking up renters rights for the state you plan on moving to and it will tell you if they are allowed to check credit or refuse to rent due to prior credit history.

I have just recently learned that some, not all, but some folks do this... You be upfront with the landlord if you know for certain that they do a credit check and offer to pay an entire extra month's rent. That sounds really stupid, but some folks seem to not mind that. The whole thing is that you have to know for certain that they do a credit check. Also... Get a copy of your credit reports. You can get a copy of your credit reports once a year for free. Take the bull by the horns and organize your credit the best way you can. Sit your rear down and do a realistic budget. Run it through Excell. Then, you start calling your creditors and settle your debts and get whatever payment agreement you can come up with for your debts in writing. Refuse to pay anything until you get stuff in writing. Then, start paying your stuff off and never open an account of any sort until everything is paid off. Do what you gotta do. You might want to call a lawyer for further guidance. Then, on the personal statement area of your credit reports, put that you have a payment plan going for all of your debts and are not going to be opening any more accounts or anything until you have everything paid off perfectly. This might help you for all I should know.

Credit is a big factor if your looking for a really posh place, but if you don't mind the slums or the ghetto, then your in good shape.

Just kidding...

I always had a saying, 'MONEY TALKS' what I mean is that you might be able to make a large deposit if they have a problem with your credit, but don't feel like scum just because you don't have the best credit rating. They need you just as bad as you need them! Don't forget that! They have vacancies that need to be filled or they lose money, fortunately for you, most apartment buildings are owed to the bank, so someone has to make that payment and all you would be doing is helping them make that payment, because if they don't make that payment, they will lose the property.

If all else fails, you might want to look for a room mate, they never check credit!

Good luck with your search!

I have never had my credit checked to get an apartment. I wouldn't let them if they wanted to. I don't think that is any of their business. good luck
