It means missing sight of the true value in something.

For example: say you don't spend a lot of time with your dog or cat, but when it's time to put the pet to sleep, you feel like you didn't spend enough time with "fuzzy." It would be because you took the life of your pet for granted.

"Taking something for granted" is not exactly an idiom but an idiomatic use of verbs. It means assuming something, before that thing actually occurs. Somewhat like "counting chickens before the eggs were hatched" - but not always that rude.

"took for granted" means to think that somthing or some work will be done without any effort. for eg. he took for granted and left office without locking.
here the person thought that somebody will lock the ofiice but it was not locked.
