The idea of a name day is very Roman Catholic and I have never come across any suggestion that individuals celebrated their name days in England in the way that their Continental neighbours do. However, there is collective celebration of the patron saints of the various countries comprising the United Kingdom, particularly St David's Day and St Patrick's Day and churches commonly celebrate their patronal festival each year (i.e. the day dedicated to the saint after whom their church is named). I think that guild churches held special services to mark the patronal festival of the patron saint of the trade concerned (e.g. St Crispin, patron saint of shoemakers) as being a good excuse for a party. But in summary, the English are clubbable people and prefer to celebrate collectively rather than individually.

Last Wendy!

Actually we haven't . We still celebrate St George, and St Valentine also St Patrick in Ireland and it is still quite common for parents to name their kids after a Saint if they were born on that particular Saints day.

I was brought up Catholic and my parents used to celebrate St Catherine of Siena's day when I was a child. I was named for her. It wasn't a big thing, no presents or anything.

Haven't heard of it for many many years though.

The worshipping of Saints is a Catholic past time, so Id imagine it became unpopular and restricted to patron saints (St George) during the reformation and the creation of Church of England (Anglican).
