It is a hype and a great one at that. I love anime than American cartoons. American cartoons make you feel like stupid with their goody-goody cartoons. Anime usually brings out action, romance, and comedy in most of their cartoons. Watch Naruto for example.

Japanese anime culture can be built on many things. From the kid oriented shows such as Hamtaro to the real mature shows such as Gantz. The maturity of anime is no different from american cartoons. Maybe the major difference is that anime has less limited boundries in the maturity. Naruto for example is targeted to people in their early teens. And yet there is an average ammount of violence and explicitness as you would expect in a cartoon for more older teens to adults. And as a 25 year old anime nut. I find this is to my liking.

People like me go for this kind of thing within anime in order to escape the high restrictness of the FCC which pushes down even some TV M rated cartoons. Of course, Japan has this kind of restrict rules itself but not as many. Which is why many fans of animation at least watch a few japanese anime shows.

If you are a newbie to the anime culture and at a young age. Then you cant possibly know on how many anime fans in the US have turned away from cartoons. Mostly because many are mostly at a age that just dont want to watch cartoons that are driven to be goody goody as one answerer said. Only a good few have this goody goody quality but at the same time, avoided itself from being horribly candy coated. The shows like Teen Titans and Avatar. But then again. These shows' art quality are based from anime. Which shows you how big a hype anime is affecting the US besides dubbed releases. But not too big a hype in which the anime art form will take over everything on TV like how CGI animation has completely pushed over regular cell frame animation in movies.

the difference might be that anime can have all sorts of stuff in it. american cartoons are majorly comedic while anime can have comedy but it's not mostly that. there are action cartoons in america but those that children can watch aren't entertaining enough to teens and the more serious ones are possibly just not the person's taste. or there's the reason that anime guys look sexy to girl and vice versa while such things america seem twisted.

It's japanese cartoons. The only difference to regular cartoon is they were made by japanese. Anime culuture is a bunch of retards who think the cartoons are real and rather live inside them than in a real life.

Its the ORIGINAL animation, walt disney ripped all his early cartoons from the japenese, its about fantasy and they project their desires through the animation, often it aint for children, there are a bunch of great places to start, Astro boy, the white lion, and th ever sexy Aeon flux... watch out they are addictive!
