I've heard that statement from most of my friends from the Gulf Coast. However, I've never heard it from any of my family that lives in New Orleans.
"I lost everything" means that their house was flooded by a canal, a river, or by storm surge. Not by a levee breach.

I have emotional attachments to my possessions, too, and it's perfectly human, but in a way it means the possessions that owned the person are now gone. A good philosophic question.

House and contents, gone---job, gone--money, gone-- life as they knew it, gone
Hopefully, no one ever loses EVERYTHING. Still has self-- and relationship with God.
