We know that when we are given a ration (16:9 for example), we are saying that the width of something in relation to the height is 16 units to 9 units. That ratio will hold true for anything that uses this ration.

So if we said the width is 16", the height would be 9" because we can say that the know width is to the known height in the same proportion as the new width is to what? This sentence can be re-written as

16 / 9 = 26 / x
This can be cross multiplied as 16x = 9 * 26
or
16x = 234
x = 14.625

You can check this by substituting into the original formula
16/9 = 26/14.625
1.777 = 1.777
This solution checks.

In the next one, we just change where the unknown is, so we say 16 / 9 = x / 13
16 * 13 = 9 * x
208 = 9x
x=23.11

To check
16/9 = 23.11/13
1.777 = 1.777

Aspect ratio is a relationship of width to height, so this ratio must be 28 / 21

a. so width is 26 and lets assume height = x
you have the ratio 16:9
therefore u do the cris-cross thing.
you put the widths together devided = to heights together devided
16/26 = 9/x
16x = 9*26
x = 14.625 inches and you can round that

b. now u have the height = 13 and width = x (ie missing so we assume it is x)

16/x = 9/13
16 * 13 = 9x
x = (16 * 13) / 9
