anything you do online can be tracked to your IP address..hence your computer.. if the person you "didn't" steal this from actually registered the product online as well, your chances of getting caught are even higher. Why don't you take it back, and go buy yourself your own...

Yeah right, you stole one or are thinking of stealing one.

They might be able to track you if the PS3 has an ip address thats unchangeable or if the company can send out a signal that only the unit that was stolen will respond to.

But once they get the IP it's only a matter of time before they find out which modem transmitted that IP over the net. Since every broadband modem is registered under the users name.

Having a hot item is still against the law and you can be arrested.

If it was registered, it could be tracked down, but I don't think the person could be arrested per se because he could have gotten it as a "hot" item or a gift, doesn't necessarily imply direct theft.

That said, I hope whoever steals a PS3 will feel guilty as heck everytime they play it. I hope he would grow a conscience.

Try it and find out. Every online machine as a MAC address unique to that machine. That is how your machine knows where every other machine is. If that is tracking, then I woudl say it is a fair bet that a stolen machine can be tracked. Now will it be? maybe, maybe not --- Try it and find out.
