I like anime myself, but here some reasons why people hate it....
Some people hate anime because some fans become so precouppied with it, it seems they have no other interests. Some become too attached to characters or imitate them. Others become overly obsessed with Japanese.
Japanese animation covers a broad range of subjects. It has its gems, but it also has its share of trash too. Not all of the good anime makes to mainstream America either. Even the good ones that do make it to the States are subject censors and poor translations. Anime can be very bizarrre and expirmental, and not everyone can appreciate the plotlines.
As an art form, some people hate it as well. They think it all looks the same (particularly facial features). On art websites like deviantart.com, anime gets a bad name because there is lots artists who draw it (and not very well) and have not learned the fundamentals of art like the professional mangaka. Others are just jealous pricks who feel they deserve more attention and close-minded about other forms of art.
Anime as medium (animation) is rather limited due to its small budget. American animation is typically 29.7 frames per second for television and 24 frams per second for film. Japanese animation is only 15 frames per second. Since American entertainment industry has more money at it's disposal than anybody else, they can pay the animators to draw more pictures required for each frame. Japanese animation cuts cost by reducing the number of frames needed for animation. They use lots of shortcuts like static mouth movement, recycled frames, and scolling still shots. Sometimes the studios are on the verge of bankruptcy even with the shortcuts. Studio Ghibli fims (Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc.) have exceptional quality animation and command larger budget compared to other Japanese animation studios. Despite the limitations, it's amazing how Japanese can make use of what they have while American films at times squanders their potential.
Anyways, don't let these people get to you. They are close-minded people who can't accept people who have different interests.

I LOVE ANIME!
But I think I know why some people hate it.
My former math teacher, and my grandma just hate looking at their "big eyes", for one thing.
My mom, who teaches in a religous school said that animes are a no-no coz the girls wear super skimpy outfits and there's violence. Which I think is kinda the main reason why.
I love anime, but the thing is, not all animes are good. Some can get very sexual, making it unsuitable for kids and some could get very scary and violent.
But still, these people should not hat all animes coz some are VERY GOOD, too.

I'd rather watch anime than some trashy Hollywood film. I won't watch just for the sake of watching though, I watch the ones I like. I love Inuyasha and Vampire Hunter D and quite like Strawberry Eggs.
I think it's funny how people say it's too violent or sexual for kids. Obviously you'd look at the rating first! You wouldn't let your kids watch The Exorcist either would you? No different from some crap Hollywood action film with guns, exploding buildings and err...running people.

It's not the anime. It's the fans.
Also, a lot of people have a very hard time understanding a lot of the plotlines in anime. They don't make a lot of sense when compared to storylines in Western animation.

I don't know to me anime is the most expresive motion picture art in production today. Way better than older cartoons and storylines are far more creative than any mainstream film or tv show.

Just like the guy said, it's the fans that irritate us because they like anime too much as if it's real and keep on discussing it like it's something really important.

its not the anime they hate. its the people who are so spastically obssessive about it. they just reference it way to often and come across as annoying. Too much of anything is bad thing.
