I am supposed to be being trained as a TEFL teacher, however I am a bit suprised with the following exercise. I feel it is not explained in a way that is actually teaching me. I am sure that being trained it should be explained with a few examples on how I detect the answers. It is more like a test than helping me to find the solutions. Can anyone assist me here, I do know what the correct answers are, but the method in detecting the 3 answers for the 3 questions they ask I think dont bare a relevance in teaching me to find what I need. Hope this does'nt sound stupid.

I am given the following sentences below and asked the 3 following questions.

1. What caused the error
2. What type of error is it
3. How would you correct it

I walk-id to school today
What do you eat for dinner yesterday
People is very friendly

That is how it is presented to me to solve, it as baffled 2 English teachers already, who told me it should be explained more clear to me.

I cannot understand why you are unable to understand the question.

It just ask you what are the errors present in the sentences provided.

For example :

For Sentence 1 "I Walk-id to school today" is like phonetic error (wrong spelling due to "guessing" of words) it should be "Walked" to school. Try training on listening skills.

For Sentence 2 "What do you eat for dinner yesterday" The error will be tenses, "Yesterday" means things happened in the past, however, the verb "do" is in present tense, hence, the verb "do" got to be changed to past tense, making the sentence "What did you eat for dinner yesterday". Try to lookout for adverb that can modify the verb.

For Sentence 3 "People is Very Friendly"..... The fundamental error is the wrong use of verb. (Subject - Verb Agreement)

People are Plural in nature, hence the use of "is" is wrong, it should be "are".

Hope that helps.

(Julie b from below :P, Sentence 3 has nothing to do with tenses, well, it is a grammatical error in the usage of verbs. If it is a problem with tenses as in it should be past tense, then it should be "People WERE very friendly".)

1. I walk-id to school today
The error is caused by the person not being able to tell the difference in sound between ed and id. the type of error is a phonetical error and it needs to be corrected by explaining and demonstrating the differences in sounds letters make and the representation on paper.
2. What do you eat for dinner yesterday.
the error is caused by a lack of understanding of standard english in relation to tenses. it is an error of tense.the error needs to be corrected with some tense exercises on paper and orally so they can hear the correct use of english
3.people is very friendly.
the error is using slang rather than standard english and also using the incorrect tense. the sentnece should read people are very friendly in the past tense.
hope it helps a bit!!!

Simple really - the other baffled English teachers must have been trained at the same place you are being trained - and badly.

Do you need someone to lead you through everything ? Not great start for a trainee teacher then. No-one can hold your hand in class.

The errors are due to poor understanding of time and tense I would imagine - not even being an English teacher or expert.

Okay, this is coming from an atheist, and I'm not trying to defend Christians, but come on. Does a child "have to know" right from wrong when a parent says "do not touch"? No. How many times has a parent said "Don't touch", and when the child says "Why", the parents answer with "Because I said so"? Look, spending 13yrs in the military, I had to follow many orders. I didn't always know why the orders were given, I didn't always know the reasons. But I was not to question them, I was just to follow them. Edit: Not that you will listen anyway, but "right & wrong" is NOT the same as "good & evil".

These are common mistakes by foreign students, what caused the error well first one grammatical understanding, you would need to re emphasise gramma,

Second is a tense error, speaking in the present tense is easier and you would need to repeat the past participle teaching

Not so sure what caused it in the third case but ultimately what this exercise is about is understanding your students and why they make the mistakes they do,

I walk-id to school today
This is a pronunciation error. It is caused by a misapplication of the three possible pronunciations for "ed" endings: /t/ /d/ and /id/.
To correct it, review this material.

What do you eat for dinner yesterday
This is a tense error. Review simple past.

People is very friendly
Subject-verb agreement. People is a plural form of person.

1 What caused the error? = What is wrong with this sentence?
2 What type of error is it? = What is the name for this type of error?
ie spelling error, phonectic pronounciation, wrong participle etc.
3 How would you correct it? = How do you make the sentence work appropriately
