Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system produced by Microsoft. It supports a superset of Structured Query Language SQL, the most common database language. It is commonly used by businesses for small to medium sized databases, and in the past 5 years large enterprise databases and competes with other relational database products for this market segment.

Its primary query language is Transact-SQL, an implementation of the ANSI/ISO standard Structured Query Language (SQL) used by both Microsoft and Sybase. SQL Server is commonly used by businesses for small- to medium-sized databases, but the past five years have seen greater adoption of the product for larger enterprise databases.

About $5000 USD more than mySQL or PostgresSQL. ;)

It's Micro$oft's implementation of a SQL server, a powerful database backend to software applications. It's biggest commercial competitor is Oracle but the two really can't even compare. Oracle is far more rubust. mySQL and PostgresSQL serve more websites combined than any others with mySQL comprising around 90% of those.
