no, the fda has not granted oral contraceptives otc status as of yet. however, they did allow Plan B (the morning after pil) to be sold without a prescription for women 18 yrs of age and older. You must go to the pharmacy and ask for it... they will check your ID and then sell it to you, but this is not a suggested form of birth control to be used all the time. There is a new bc on the market called loestrin 24 that shortens most periods to 3-4 days a month. Seasonale and Seasonique are bc's that you only have one period every 3 months (4 periods a year). It usually takes one month of taking them everyday at the same time of day to be considered protected by the pill. BC pills contain female hormones and if you have a family history of breast cancer, you may want to avoid them. Also, they can predispose you to getting blood clots... this risk is markedly increased if you are also a smoker. Hope this helps. Anymore questions just ask.

NO you can't get birth controll OTC( over the counter) they are perscription only since they are regulated by the FDA. that would be because of the side effects. in younger women the effects are generally mild and include mild blood pressure increase as one of the more noted and blood clots as the most severe. in older women the blood pressure and blood clots are joined by stroke and heart attack.
it takes one full cycle on the pill before it is considered to be fully effective. that would be 28 days. do note that birth controll does have some interesting interactions with other drugs, though most doctors forget to mention them. I have seen blood pressure meds trigger eradict periods and spotting for several days when they are first started. also antibiotics will counteract birth control and leave it ineffective. if you are on antibiotics you will not want to use birth controll as your contraceptive, since it won't work.

you can't just go to the pharmacy and get birth control pills. I'd look for a plan parenthood in your area. they help women get birth control pills and can answer all your questions.

you can buy them over the counter in the USA, you need a prescription. you might be able to in other countries which is why some people said yes. some birth controls like seasonale you only get a period once every 3 months, all of them help regulate it so it is more regular.
