I need a lot of explaining done to help me understand the stages of meiosis & identifying what stage is what by looking at pictures.

Here is a copy of my homework for tonight:

If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it a lot. I've been stuck on this homework for hours. And I've researched already but I just don't get it.

Chromosomes, Mitosis, & Meiosis are discussed on this website. It even has a demonstration with audio and visual. I tried finding something that would help. Good luck.

The first phase is prophase 1 and what happens in that phase is that the homologous chromosomes come together in pairs (homologous chromosomes are the matching pairs of chromosomes) and exchange genetic material. So just say you have 1 pair of chromosomes from your mom and one from your dad these two come together and they exchange some information with eachother so you have some characteristics from your dad and mom. The diagram would be number 3 because you can see they've come together and their exchanging DNA. The next step is Metaphase 1. In that stage chromosomes line up across the middle of the cell in their pairs. that would be diagram 4 because you can see their in the middle and you see that dotted line in the middle? that's called the cell equator. The next step is called Anaphase 1. In this stage spindle fibres contract and shorten so the homologous pairs become separated from eachother because the spindle fibres are pulling them away. that would be diagram 1 cause you can see their getting pulled away from eachother and it wouldn't be diagram 2 because the cell hasn't divided into 2 yet. The next step is Telophase 1. In this phase 2 new cells are begginging to form so their going through cytokinises which is the separation of the cell contents into equal parts. It would be diagram 6 because you can see two new cells are about to separate from eachother and become individual. The next step is prophase 2 which is when the spindle fibres form because in telophase the spindle fibres dissappear. This is diagram 7 because you can see there's 2 new cells there's the chromosomes and there's the spindle fibres and we'll get to why it shouldn't have been diagram 5. The next step is Metaphase 2 which is when the chromosomes align in the middle. And that would be diagram 5 because they've lined up in the middle. The next phase is anaphase 2 which is when the spindle fibres contract and shorten which would be diagram 2. and the last step is telophase 2 which 4 new cells have formed and you can see which diagram that is. hope you've learned now and good luck
