I thought firewall should stay on all the time, any thoughts, my windows XP is a legal copy.

If its the windows firewall your talking about go to the windows security center and enable it then it should start up when you turn the PC on.

I personally would advise you to not use Windows Firewall as it's not the best firewall for security.

run the following two menus of ccleaner
cleaner > Analyze > Run Cleaner
Issues > Scan For Issues > Fix Selected Issues
(It is unheard of that windows firewall needs to be activated)
