Abs is NEVER used for dynamic (flowing) or static pressure. Both ABS and PVC can be solvent welded; ABS can also be connected with no hub and rubber couplings. ABS is smoother inside so that it will not hinder drainage; it can also withstand higher temperatures associated with showers and kitchen drains. A special type of PVC (CPVC) has the ability to withstand heat and has been used for whole house piping.
PVC comes in a wide range of colors, usually associated with its usage; white is usually used for irrigation because it doesn't have good Ultra violet resistance properties. For above ground irrigation systems as on slopes a tan pvc pipe is used. C900 is green and typically used for medium pressure underground water distribution lines. It can be solvent sealed or gasket sealed.

ABS is the black plastic pipe mostly used for drain, waste and vents (DWV.) ABS is the chemical formula for Acrylonitrile Butadene Styrene. Most common sizes are 1-1/2", 2", 3", 4" and 6" diameters. ABS plumbing systems are generally not for pressurized water.

PVC is a white (or purple) plastic pipe for fresh water. The formulation is Poly Vinyl Chloride. Purple is used to identify non-potable water, such as reclaimed or recycled water for irrigation. Several common PVC pipe diameters are 1/2", 3/4" and 1" diameters, and PVC can be pressurized. See table below.
