First you say your husband was fired, then you use the word "layoff". Which?
No, an employer does not have to tell you why you are being fired; but, I am sure your husband knows.
Anyone who loses a job is entitled to file for unemployment benefits. The state determines whether a person is entitled to unemployment benefits, based upon where the person worked and if unemployment benefits were paid into the system. An employee does not pay any of these benefits, they are paid esclusively by the employer, and not every employer is required to pay them.

Some contracts state that you can be fired at the companies desire. BUT I would have your husband talk to a supervisor and see what is going on. As for unemployment....it depends on how lond he worked there and how long he worked at a previous job. If you file for unemployment you list your previous employer as well as the reason you were terminated. They will contact the employer for an explination and then your case has to be approved or not. I think that you can get unemployment even if you were fired but it may take longer. Call your local employment office and they will sit down and discuss the options. Calm down...God only gives us things he knows we can handle. This may be a blessing in disguise. Take a deep breath and I promise everything will be fine. God Bless you and your family and most of all good luck!

you don't say where you live... and that makes all the difference in the world.
And, you don't say if your hubby had a contract.
Basically, in the USA, if you don't have a contract, you are an "employee at will." Either side can end the relationship for ALMOST any reason.
Obviously, one cannot be fired for race, refusing sexual advances, pregnancy, etc.
Most people find that either they get fired, or they lose their housing, or both, when a baby comes along. Dunno why, but it does happen. Murphy's Law I guess.
I'd file for unemployement. That way your hubby will have some idea of why he was fired if they deny the claim.

In some states like Tennessee I have heard that the law says an employer can fire people w/out any reason at all and on the spot. Its crazy.

It depends on where you live, if the state is an at-will state they can hire and fire at will with no reason, but he may still be eligible for unemployment if he was fired. If he was laid-off they have to give him a letter of recommendation for future employers.

Dismissal from employment must be valid wherein a notice of termination must be issued after a formal investigation was conducted under the Labor Laws. Thus, your husband can file a case of illegal dismissal against his employer and request for reinstatement plus payment of backwages and damages.

If you are fired you can file for unemployment. As for the reason, there is no requirement unless he is a union member.
