No Rio De Janiero is lovely.

There has been much gang rebellion but i felt at ease while i was there. If you have street smarts you'll be fine. There are plenty of problems everywhere around the world.

The beaches, copacabana, sugar loaf mountains, etc. are absolutely beautiful.

If you haven't been already, don't let the hype discourage you!!

Any place is dangerous to visit if you do not know anything about the culture and language. Tourist are snatched every day in foreign countries because they are ignorant of the place. I suggest you do more research besides asking someone if it is safe or not. I am not being rude.

Yes,
Same as New York or Los Angeles or any BIG city.

In most major cities yu should avoid to carry "at sight" your video camera, wallet, etc.

Avoid isolated streets or places without light, etc.

Same cautions as in any other major city.
