Yes, I read it about 18 years ago, and then again recently when I picked up a copy for my kids. It's a great book, and the movie certainly fell short. The overarching point of Bastien's transformation and return to life is lost, and the fact that they refused to film him looking like the book's description (fat, glasses, pasty), saps a lot of the strength from it. When Atreyu sees Bastien in the mirror, he's supposed to be genuinely horrified at the thought that this is his innermost self. Instead, it looks silly, like he's overreacting. And Bastien doesn't get to feel the pain of that reaction.
I also think it's good for kids to read the second half and see how getting your every wish, even if you've suffered in proper fairy tale fashion, can turn you into a not-very-nice person if you let it.

I read it a long time ago in the German original. I was a bit disappointed, since Michael Ende had written a couple of wonderful children's books in the 1960s, particularly the two wonderfully absurd "Jim Knopf" volumes (translated as "Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver" and "Jim Button and the Wild 13" respectively), but from the 1970s on he tried to do fantasy and did mostly kitsch instead.
