Generally, guys who trash other guys for wearing earrings do so because they lack the cojones to do it themselves or to just let people with different taste be.
Next, you'll probably call Jessica Simpson a butch lesbian for wearing pants, right?

well, different people has different sense of style and fashion.
Maybe to them, it is cool, but not to some people.
The idea of piercing their one ear may be because they are being influenced by some Actors or Singers, or maybe from their environment.
If you thing it is girlish or meaningless, dont pierce.

Because piercing both ears would make them look gay, or that is what they have always been lead to believe. So they follow the trend and just do one ear.

One of my co-workers has an earring an he gets teased that there are only two types of men who wear earrings and there's pirate ship in the parking lot.

One ear, two ears, it doesn't really matter-- that whole unwritten code was a product of the 1970s gay scene. Now it doesn't really matter which ear.... matey.
