Clan of the Cave Bears by Jean Auel. The whole Earth's Children series is fascinating.

This book is an impeccably researched novel about the life of Ayla, a pre-historic five year old girl orphaned by an earthquake.

The story takes the reader on a breath taking journey of man during the ice age when he was "discovering" himself. Auel's writing not only enlightens the reader on the world of the Cave Man, but incorporates all the intricacies of life along with visual "pictures" so well told that you feel the cold of the glaciers, the love of an adopted mother, and vicious hate of a jealous male.

The novel leaves you wanting more and Auel delivers with the series Earth's Children. VERY good reading.

The Life of Pi, by Yann Martell... it's an excellent modern day fable... a 'can't put this book down' book. It's about a boy who becomes shipwrecked with a bunch of zoo animals, including a Bengal tiger. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_of_Pi

The Birth House by Ami McKay... perhaps the best book I read last year (I read about 2-3 novels/month). Well written, SUPER funny, and a great story. A total page turner! She's got a cool website to go along with her book http://www.thebirthhouse.com/

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs by Irvine Welsh. It's a great modern take on The Picture of Dorian Gray.

One of my favorites of 2006.

"Odd Thomas" by Dean Koontz (and its sequels)
"Water for Elephants" by Sarah Gruen (I think that's the name)

Both are fun and easy reads with great characters!
