When you consider the number of planets in a solar system, then the number of solar systems in a galaxy, and finally the number of galaxies in the universe, even if life were a one in a billion chance, there'd be thousands of planets capable of sustaining life in the universe. I would say that some of that life would most definitely be intelligent.

Is any of that life visiting us, though? I would say almost invariably impossible, simply because of the distances that one would have to travel. The closest known star to our solar system is over four light years away. Even at the speed of light, that's a four year trip. Forget about Star Trek, because you're not going from star to star in hours, days or even weeks unless there was a form of travel that could pass the distance without actually traveling the space in between. Generation ships are possible, but impractical unless the intent was colonization. So, don't count on meet ET anytime soon.

Even if you are a religious person and believe a supreme being started life on Earth, I think it would be very difficult to deny the likelihood of intelligent life existing on another planet. Likely even within our own arm of the Milky Way.

The fact we exist means the probability of intelligent life in the universe is exactly 1 - meaning it does exist. Earth is just one small planet in one small solar system in the distant reaches on just one galaxy. How can anyone possibly believe we are unique then there are so many billions of solar systems just in our own galaxy and that there are so many billions of galaxies in the universe. I would imagine the odds of us being unique are so infinitesimally small you might as well say zero.

As others have said, the likelihood we have ever been visited by intelligent life are very small - unless you consider the possibility they are many thousands of years more developed than we are. Just look at how long it takes our fastest space craft to get to the outer reaches of our own solar system and then try to imagine how long it would take to get to the nearest star.

For example, the space shuttle orbits Earth at about 18,000 mile per hour. The Sun is about 93 million miles from Earth. It takes sunlight about 8 minutes to reach Earth, but it would take the space shuttle about 215 days to travel from the Earth to the Sun. It will take the New Horizons craft about 9½ years to get to Pluto even if that was the time to get there in a straight line it would take about 7000 times that long to get to the closest star (at least according to my math).

Though we have no evidence that aliens exist no doubt they proliferate throughout the universe.
Without us and other aliens the universe would have no sense of existence,we are it"s eyes and ears.
We are the inevitable results of a universe that has developed the capacity to become aware of itself.

it is true.though all people around me donot believe.
I believe, that people of mars made life on earth before their very developed planet faced extinction(like the earth is in danger coz of pollution etc.).It's proof is the carvings of people in space suit on the walls of ancient cities. and we may be worshipping them like gods.this is my theory about the aliens.doesn't it sound interesting????!!many other planets may have life on them.
So,in near future as scientists are discovering good conditions for living on mars, may be it is our turn to make mars a living planet and they will worship us like gods!!!!!
