I have 2 roomates and we split the utilities evenly. We have Tivo and we seem to have an issue with the recording space. I have had many things I've recorded lately that have been stopped early because the lack of recording space. My one roomate has some items recorded which he would not like to be erased. Keep in mind they were recorded before me and the other roomate moved in. I counted the hours of recorded space then came to find that me and my other roomate have a total of 11 hours. The roomate in question has a grand total of 51 hours of recorded space. Me and the other guy feel he should pay more for the cable bill if he is going to monopolize all the recording space. What do you think?

I think you should all go in for a DVD Recorder (DVDR) and the one who wants to keep those 51 hours of programming should burn them off to DVD and keep them separate from the shared recording space. Each of you should buy your own blank DVDs so you don't get into another argument.
DVDRs also play commercial DVDs, so you can use it as a shared DVD player for the household as well.
When one of you moves out, he either pays the shares of the others to take the DVDR with him or he sells his share to the ones remaining. (Probably probably for a little less than you originally paid because it'll be worth less as time passes.)

I think it is very reasonable for each of you to pay your fair share of the recording space. If one person is using 5 times more of the space, then he should be paying 5 times more for the bill. Of course you need to consider the total time spent watching TV in general, also. Hope you can come up with an amicable resolution.

If he is going to expect a majority share of the recorded space, it is only fair he should pay a majority of the bill.
