Do you think we are better off being a Republic (meaning we are governed by our Constitution) or should we become a true Democracy (majority rules, even if it is just 51%)?

Thank you to those who actually gave an opinion on the question that I presented... And I'm sorry I wasn't clear, I was talking about the great United States of America.

Our Constitution, if we Govern ourselves based on what it says, not the fantasy read ins of people today, then that is the best we can have. The Small Government, with limited interference with the lives of the citizens would be profoundly successful. But the Citizenry has allowed the government to overstep its Constututional limits to create a welfare state. Now we rely on the government for everyhting. Education, Food, Protection, Business Regulation. It's rediculous.

The blame for this does not fall on the Politicians. Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. The blame falls on an uninterested population who want the government to do everything for them.

The United States used to be a country of rugged individualists. We need to return to that Individualist, small government, Constitutional system.

Right now we are living essentially a Socialist State.

Pure Democracies never work. Never Will Work, no point in trying.

Democracy is better than the republic because the vote of the majority is respected rather than in a republican government where the representatives of the local government or states are the ones making the decisions for the people.

We live in a Democratic Republic. China and Cuba are Republics but their representatives are not elected.

Ben Franklin said, "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for lunch.". He was a great proponent of Democracy but he knew it was not perfect.

Our country was set up with elected representatives to overcome the problems of majority rule. Rule by elected officials along with the Bill of Rights protect minorities from the tyranny of majority rule.

The populous is further protected from the tyranny of government through the separation of powers (administrative, legislative, and judicial) along with its checks and balances.

A Republic is much better. Pure Democracy is not only impractical (think of counting 100 million votes every time we need to make a minor change in day-to-day operations of our government) but is also too volitile. If the majority ruled, the minority would always be oppressed and discriminated against. If majority ruled, women would not be able to vote, there would be no Civil Rights, no disabilities act, basically every minority would be marginalized.

Republic.....George Bush President of the United States is a man without honor. He has spread shame on America, it's Constitution, and it's People. It is a highly embarrassing situation for every Good American. This Man has spun completely out of control and he needs to be stopped immediately. President Bush has discounted himself to nothing more then a mere "War Criminal."
