I mean, look at the state of the country as compared with what it could be. Bush has gotten away with bloody murder, really, not to mention a lot more.

Guys, I like the *concept* of America... freedom, justice, and equality FOR ALL. But what we are NOW is a joke, and a terribly sad one at that. I don't see why we need to be jingoistic about it and say love it or leave it... I've seriously considered moving to Canada or the UK when I get old enough, but I figured why just abandon something that has so much promise when with a lot of work it could be so awesome. I am ashamed to be an American now, but I think with work it could be something we can be truly proud of. I mean dying in a war sucks, but it does not diminish the fact that we have a ton of social problems that we MUST fix.

Yes, I am an ashamed US veteran.
I live in a town of 5,000 in Mexico.
After about two years, my neighbors finally told me that I am the only American they know who does not love George Bush.
American missionaries came here in 2004. They wailed out and cried real fake tears and begged God to reelect George Bush. No conversions but they got W back in office...
Where are those Christ people now? Thanking God for Iraqi oil for Bush's oil buddies?
George Bush in the "best country" in the world, has wide support to allow torture, rape and abuse, under 'certain approved' circumstance.
Afterall, the missionaries told us, it is a small price to pay to keep America 'safe'.
Where have all the good people gone? Hell, yes, I am ashamed.
Doesn't anyone read anymore? Think for themselves even once?

I've been living here for going on 74 years and I have never been ashamed of being an American. I've seen wars, I've seen peace. I've seen the best and the worst of this country. I've been ashamed for some of the people from time to time but what I've learned over the years is that no matter how bad it might seem, we always seem to have the ability to get ourselves back on the right track. Conversely, no matter how good times are, some one will always be able to come along and muck it all up. You all that want to go to Canada or where ever, just be on your way. I'm going to stick around as long as the Lord wills and see what happens next.

No, dont be ashamed of being an American.
It is just that a few or some bad ruling authorities that damage the identity of the society/nation.
It is the same goes here with other countries especially Muslim countries that leaders/authorities wrongfully use their power in the name of God, cited AlQuran verses, wrongfully translate them for their own interest or deny the freedom & rights of their society /women.
We, the people in Muslim countries, although frustrated and outraged by Bush Administration's ways in handling international issues, we still admire the life of American families such as freedom to ask, interactions, communication, lively greets, rationality, ideas and many more. We inspired by your Lincoln, .. America was once our saviour during WW2, our hero as we watched your John Wayne, good family values as we watched your "Eight is Enough" or Laura's family in "the Little House On The Prairie" or even your Homer family in The Simpsons!
We still need you as the benchmark in achieving a freedom society, remove radical and irrational present Muslim leaders' thinking, replace them with more rational and liberal leaders & authorities for better and peaceful life, in-line with the correct Islamic taught and right message in the Al Quran.
American Muslims, do not follow all the corrupt idea as in the Arab world, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and many other Muslims leaders and authorities.
Be different and keep the American freedom and values.
It is not my own opinion, we share the same opinion, all my Muslims friends all around the world (mostly US or Werstern educated).
May God bless you all and peaceful life, insyaallah!

Not at all. Sometimes the person we voted for wins and sometimes he doesn't. Whether my candidate wins or not, I know that my country isn't defined by the President. I may not always agree with this policy or that policy, but I love America and feel very safe living here. If you buy into media hype (remember, scandal is the bread and butter of the media), then you are getting the "outsider" view of America...
Social problems are NOT the government's responsibility! You, me, WE are America. Don't whine about the social problems. Roll up your sleeves, get out into your community, and DO something. We are each other's responsibility.
If you don't like what you see, change it. Make it better.
Or move to France.

There is no reason to be ashamed of this country. If you are, then get the heck out. I am sorry to be blunt. But I have friends and family who have been killed and wounded in the War. I have had an ancestor/relative fight in every single American War, from the beginning, I can trace my line back to the Mayflower, and even to the lost Colonists at Roanoke.
This is a great country to live in. The Constitution is one amazing document, it is a shame liberals have torn it to shreds the last century.
I am ashamed to share this wonderful country with you. Why don't you go tell a Marine how you feel, I am sure they will be very sympathetic.

I am ashamed that Americans elected Bush as president. However, I am not personally ashamed to be an American. In fact, I am proud and grateful.

While I don't agree with all of the presidents policies he is still the President! Just because I don't agree with all of his policies should not reflect the feeling for ones country!!!

Yes because of our activities in Iraq. in 1990 and before 1990 Iraq was an ally. Then President Bush Sr sent an envoy to Iraq and conned Saddam Hussein into invading Kuwait. Those people gassed at Habaja were actually gassed by the Iranians. the Problem in the 1970s was Iran. The problem in the 1980s was Iran. the probem in the 1990's was Iran and today the problem is Iran. Yet we are over in Iraq murdering yes murdering innocent Iraqi civilians. over 14000 last year alone. If my local paper chose to tell me accurately. After reading this do you feel proud to be American today Wake up sign a petition to impeach George Bush before it is too late Iran might get the bomb while we are over in Iraq murdering innocent people.

I don't know about ashamed, but maybe something... like when your parents embarrass you in front of strangers. This is still my country, and I will love it know matter what. That being said, if Bush was our dad, I hope Canada would have called Child Protection Services by now.
