Go from "general" to "specific". Say you are trying to find a contact # for a specific person, start searching under (organization: wherever they are), then you can narrow it down once you reach a site by clicking on links that get you to the exact item you are looking for. The search engine will break down the phrase you input into separate words, which may help to refine your search. You can search an "exact' term or phrase by placing it in quotes, or you can search for more than one thing together by using "&" to separate the terms. You can also do advanced searches, but i don't bother with it. I can usually find what it is I am looking for.

Some sites will search multiple search engines (like "dogpile"), including Yahoo, MSN, Google and Ask. SavvySearch, which is just "Search" now is also a good one, recommended to me by a librarian.

well if you are using yahoo.com or google.com for example say I want to search Cars, if I want to narrow my search I would go like this:
Cars +sports (this would give me only sport cars, or cars with the name sport)
OR
Cars -muscle (this would give me every car without muscle cars, excluding muscle cars!)

Hope this helps
