I've been doing this professionally for over 20 years. Some of the advice you are getting truly shocks me. I routinely have companies pay us serious money to remove the very products which are being recommended to you.

I'm not a huge fan of security suites, I've always found I can minimize resource usage and memory footprint by taking the component approach.

Here is what I can tell you. In my offices, we have workstations and servers. I have taken a different approach with the two. We also have our own testing lab, where we run our own tests before making recommendation to corporate clients.

I have chosen a security suite for our servers because resource usa is not an issue, and overall stability is vital. We tested and chose BitDefender Pro for the Windows-based servers.

I selected the component approach for the workstations. CA Antivirus 2007 plus Anti-spyware for antivirus, SpyBot Search & Destroy for a user initiated anti-spyware solution, and ZoneAlarm Pro picking up the firewall duties.

The component approach was partly a financial decision. It was more cost effective when spread over multiple workstations. CA is also slightly leaner than Bitdefender when it comes to system resources.

If I had to choose an integrated solution for my own use, as much as I prefer CA as an antivirus solution, I'd have to go with BitDefender as a suite.

Roll ya own! For free.

1. For your Anti-Virus.........................

I like the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Updates many times per day to detect new malware.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

2. For your Firewall......................

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............

Pick and choose, 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

Spybot Search and Destroy:

Ewido:

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Windows Defender:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:

4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place...................

SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:

Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!

Great luck!

I recommand Panda Antivirus, it has all security other then any other anitivirus suites. It provides antispam, antivirus, firewall, unknown viruses dectection,antidialers,Wi-Fi firewall.

It is lighter in resources then any other suites and most of its scanning is fastest. Its update daily through internet sometimes its updated two times a day that why it is more secure one then other.

Most of the Suites are resource hogs. The free and separate programs are much lighter on the system.

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.

If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.

Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

i might propose Norton 360. particularly while you're questioning of paying for for Norton 360 , then it does not make experience to contemplate Norton information superhighway protection 2010, when you consider that Norton 360 already grants that. McAfee is likewise a good one. I even have considered F-shelter is likewise a good. particularly the ingredient you're experiencing with unfastened utility does not be the comparable with paid utility like the above. those paid utility grants a much extra perfect consumer experience than unfastened utility. this is from my experience. One i used homestead windows XP with Norton anti virus. The experience replaced into plenty extra perfect than i had with pirated utility. XP got here with my workstation as a OEM product. Now i could no longer arise with the money for the pricing of vista or homestead windows seven (7). So i replaced to unfastened utility (open source) Linux .once you're like me then who in general does surfing and a few rfile modifying. Then i might strongly propose you utilize Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10. It replaces your homestead windows with Linux and all the utility we require. And it free of cost and it works great. not extra virus or something to agonize approximately. merely chuffed surfing.
