We have replaced the water pump and seals on the car a few months ago.my husband took the car on a long drive and when he came back i can smell the anitfreeze inside the car. When it starts and the hearter is on but, the floor is not wet the heater is not misting anything and the widows are not foggin up so i assume that its not the heater core. also i Do not see any leaks on the ground. The car will start to get warm on the guage but then it goes back down to normal and the smell will clear up after a while but comes back? Anyone have any idea what it is or where to check for leaks. again the seals are not leaking there is no antifreeze in oil and i havent had to add any antifreeze so if its a leak its not a big one.

OK like i said the thermostat is working cause the car starts to get hot but then the thermostat kicks in. Also on this car if the heater core is broken it will leak inside the car. thats what the GM dealer told me. The person who said about pin hole leaks thank you! i just did a little searching and found something about the hoses leaking and can make it smell in the cabin so hopefully that is it. My husband has fixed heater cores on a few cars is a big job but yes ppl can do it by themselves its just a matter of taking the dash all apart and getting it back together thank you all who answered just wondering if anyone has had this problem with regals before?

It is possible that you have an air leak between the engine compartment and the car interior but you would also smell oil/gas type smells in that case.

The most likely culprit is a pinhole leak in the heater core. This will not always show up as fogging windows or wet spots at first. Your first warning will be the smell. It only takes a mechanic a couple minutes to check. But find one you trust or you will be replacing half the car before you get out of there. ;-)

It is possible that the new water pump is now pushing the water along at a rate that is knocking off old gunk and corrosion that had collected resulting in a pin hole.

The temperature should not rise above and fall back. It is possible that the thermostat is defective or backwards (we're assuming that they replaced it as no one would reuse the old one as they are cheap). A backwards thermostat could also create a back pressure that could cause a pinhole leak in an old heater core.

It is coming from the heater core or one of the lines. It may only be a very small leak and the coolant could be leaking down behind the carpet so you can't see it but you can smell it. Try looking up under the dash on the passenger side with a flashlight.

Your heater core is busted. you may or may not see a leak from it. The heater core is where the smell is coming from. It will probably need replaced, I do not know of anyone being able to repair one. It is usually underneath the dash on the passenger side.

LOOK ON THE R/SIDE FLOOR TO SEE IF ANTIFREEZE IS LEAKING IT MAY BE THE HEATER CORE. DO THE WINDOWS GET STEAMED UP. IF SO ITS THE CORE. OR GET THE SYSTEM PRESSURE TESTED TO FIND THE LEAK

Probably a corroded heater core. If it is, you will soon see steam rising out of your dashboard.
Actually they're not too difficult to replace once you get the dash out. You can pick up a re-cored one for less that $200.00.

Good luck.

i own a repair shop, and what might be happening to it the over flow bottle might be spitting the coolant back in the bottle at times,,and this will create a smell for a few minutes on it,,it wont loose any,,but my truck has done it a few times,,and i thought the core was gone in it,,but it wasn't,,just keep an eye on it,,and maybe it will finally stop doing that,,but if you keep smelling it,,get a new cap for the coolant container out in under the hood,,i did,and now i don't smell it any at all, good luck hope this help,s.

Heater core is leaking or your thermostat is not working properly.

It may not be the heater core itself but one of the hoses connected to it. Check them for pin hole leaks..............
