In addition to what the others have said, you can check local law schools to see if they have clinics that can help.

But yeah, you have to be charged in a criminal proceeding and unable to afford one to get a court appointed attorney.

You can't. Court appointed attorneys are for people charged with criminal offenses, who cannot afford an attorney of their own.

If this is for a civil case, like you want to sue somebody, you're on your own.

If you're a witness for a crime or a case, you can try talking to the district attorney or the defendant's lawyer, but you don't automatically get one of your own. Any more details? Might be able to provide more info...

What are the circumstances? Usually you can only get a court appointed attorney to represent you in a criminal proceeding if you cannot afford representation to provide a fair trial.

You have to be charged before you can get a court appointed attorney.

Many cities have legal aid programs where you can get free or inexpensive legal advice. Check your yellow pages.
