You are on a Windows XP computer, right? If you aren't, the solution below won't help. The new Internet Explorer 7 will only work on a Windows XP computer. If you have any other Windows version, you will have to use Firefox. Or download Internet Explorer 5.5 from Microsoft.com.

If you are on Win XP, go to the Control Panel, click "Add or Remove Programs," and check to see if "Windows Internet Explorer" is listed in the huge list of programs that will show up. If it isn't, install it again (note: installation requires an active Internet connection, I tried installing it without Internet on once; IE didn't work)

If it is, go to "Set Program Access and Defaults" and click on "Custom." You will then have a screen showing what Internet browsers you have. Check to see if "Internet Explorer" has been checked in the "Enable Access to this Program" box.

If it is checked, try restarting your computer, if you haven't already done so. If you have restarted a billion times, stick to Firefox, it has fewer problems.

If you have a windows PC then it should have come with Internet Explorer (if you are not in the EU), so there was no need to download it.

Anyways, you should have gotten the latest version (IE7) from the MS website. Double click on the file you downloaded, then step through the install process. The first time you run IE, it should ask you if you want to make it the default. Click yes, and you should be all set.

Although you really should stick with the more secure firefox ;)

Open up Internet Explorer and click 'Tools' in the toolbar then scroll down to the bottom and click 'Internet Options' or 'Options' and in the tabs click 'programs' then at the bottom there should be a box checked or un-checked saying 'Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser' make sure that box is checked and close out of Internet Explorer. Then Re-open it (Internet Explorer) and it should ask you if you want to make it your default browser and click yes.

OR

you could just go into your control panel and go to add/remove programs and delete Mozilla Firefox if you dont want it anymore.

To change you default browser open Windows Explorer. Not Internet Explorer. Click one Tools from the drop down menu. Then click on File Options. On the tab click on file type and scroll down to HTML. Click change and browse to IE located in Program File directory. When this is done you will be back to Folder Options click on apply then okay. You browser is now set for IE as your default browser. If your browser is not working correctly, try upgrading your browser or replace it with the latest version. IE 7 still have a few bugs that have not been straighten out yet..

Between those two, Firefox is the better browser because of all of the security holes that Explorer has. But I use a browser called Opera, which is even better than Firefox, and is somewhat equivalent safety-wise to the Safari browser on Apple products.

Just a word of advice - Stick with Firefox

United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team:
"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"

Log into Microsoft.com/downloads and you can install Explorer 7, which was the most recent. You can also run FireFox, but as long as you have Microsoft Windows you can download for free.
