After reading everyone's answers so far. Here's my experience with ferrets as we have two. 1. Cat food does not make them sick or kill them. We've been feeding ours cat food for 9 years and they are still going strong. 2. Ferrets are best bought in pairs because they get bored really quick. This is why they start playing and stashing stuff. If they are alone, then they need to be taken out and played with everyday to socialize them. 3. Ferrets don't bite all the time. When they are young, they will bite only becuase they are babies. You have to think of them like puppies and babies, they chew because their teeth hurt. Find something they can chew on to help ease the pain. Even when they do bite at that age, it doesn't hurt. However when they are older and bite, you might want to correct it. A little tap on the head and no works. 4. Ferrets are meat eaters. They need protein regularly. This is why they like cat food. If you can't afford ferret food, cat food is ok. Ferrets also like raisins but don't give them too much or they'll get the runs. I'd say no more than 2-4 a day. One thing that's really funny is to take an empty raisin box and let them play with it. They love searching for food. I hope this helps with your ferret. 5. Ferrets are noted to live 8-10 years. If you have a 15 year old ferret your lucky. All ferret books mention the 8-10. If you have questions, feel free to ask me. Max - 2 years old male and Pepper - 9 years old female.

Selling young ferrets and placing unwanted ferrets in new homes for free is part of my job. I am assuming nothing about you and offer information. Ferrets generally live about 7-10 years in this day and time. Like any other animal, the more we learn about their health/diet, the longevity increases. We sell only Marshall's Ferrets because theirs have the best temperament. Before purchasing a ferret, make the pet shop people handle it. If the ferret is really biting the arms or fingers hard, don't get that ferret. Ferrets can bite if they are extremely hungry, have ear mites, are not spayed/neutered or are not handled. Males have the best overall temperament. We recommend a quality ferret diet like Marshall's, Kaytee or othe major name brand. Catfood and ferret food from the stores that advertise low, low prices are not good for the ferret. If in doubt, look up the National Ferret Association. Our ferrets, as many other pet shop ferrets, are already spayed/neutered, descented and have the first distemper shots.Ferrets that remain in the house do not need rabies vaccinations but this may vary by state. One ferret needs at least the size of one large rabbit cage to run around in. Ferrets love to have a companion. Doesn't matter if it be a dog, cat or other ferret. Safety should be of utmost concern for the new ferret owner. We always stress the importance of not leaving a ferret unattended. Ferrets are so curious that they get hurt and killed accidentally. When you are not going to be home, leave the ferret in its cage. They are sneaky and smart too. It is nothing for one to easily learn how to open the cage door to escape. Never gjive latex toys or toys for children under age 3 for ferrets to play with. The most frequent complaint I hear besides ferrets being mean, is how awful they smell. Yesterdays News is one of the best litters available. If you cannot afford that, then use pine shavings that have been heat treated and the excess dust removed. Aspen that is chopped or ground really fine works well too. Never use cedar shavings. The nails need to be trimmed on a regular basis. It is easy to tell where to trim so no vet is needed. Only bathe the ferret about once every 2 weeks, and use ferret shampoo. Marshalls and Four Paws have excellent shampoo. A hammock is an essential piece of equipment, along with a water bottle that hangs on the outside of the cage, and a hard flat pottery dish that cannot be moved around. Little ferrets need to be fed softened food from 6 weeks old until about 11 weeks old. Don't use a water bottle until after then also. Hope this helps.

I really wish you had asked questions like this BEFORE you got the ferret. They are not like a cat or dog but they can be fun pets for the right people. They are also very rambunctious and get into everything. This causes many people to get tired of them and leave them in the cage and not play with them. This really is not fair to the ferret. They will always have a smell to them. They climb on and inside everything they can, including the furniture from the bottom of the couch. They will hide in places where you can easily loose them. Keep a collar or harness with a bell on them. If you plan to have them outside, you need to use a harness for sure but practice using the leash indoors first. You don't want to try to catch a ferret outside.

ive had 5 ferrets all together, i think they are excellent pets, they are very clownish andfunny when u play with them, try placing it in the floor move your hand around hell attack it like a kitten will, they will also chase u around the house which is fun, u can feed them catfood they will use a corner in there cage for a rest room, if u let run around the house remember the like to get in small places, chairs couches heater vents, just remember anything there head fits into there whole body will, if they run the house keep an eye out in corners of the house where they go to the bathroom and place a litter box there, for the smell they make a shampoo for ferrets helps with the smell, also if u would like by a harness and leash and take it for walks if u have any questions im me or email me

It is important for a ferret owner to handle a young ferret correctly.Ferrets tend to be very nippy as kits, requiring patience and persistence in handling.

Many enjoy chewing items made of soft rubber, foam, or sponge, which present the risk of intestinal blockage and death if ingested. Serious and sometimes fatal injuries have resulted from ferrets chewing on electrical cords.

Ferrets are obligate carnivores, their natural diet consists of whole small prey--meat, organs, raw bones--not just meat, and they lack the ability to digest vegetable matter.

you got an animal without researching it? That was very immature.

Ferrets REQUIRE yearly shots, can live up to 15yrs, are carnivors, SHOULD live in pairs, and need HUGE cages, AND they should NOT be given cat food, even if it is the best kind out there! you should get a high quality ferret food, as there is something in cat food (can't remember what it was exactly) that can make them sick and kill them.

Do a little research next time

I completely agree with every thing Trollkepr said just wanted to add one thing Ferrets love to hide or stash things. They all do it, there is just no telling what your ferret will take to hiding. Penny, one of my ferrets liked our socks and undies and Dr.Pepper bottles. Mercedes liked spoons and other shiny metal things. Nicky liked to hide baby bottles, pacifiers, and other rubber objects.

I got one before & I was not educated about them. They stink even if they are "de-funked" (lol, that's not the term, but you know what I mean) they don't really "stink" but they have a musky smell. They are VERY VERY smart and if you don't know too much, yes, read up. We had to give ours back because he was too much of a little rascal for us.
They're adorable and cute, but not for the flippant owner.

They need to have rabies shots.
They like catfood (don't know if they are allowed to have it, but they like it)
They can have their smell glands removed, and you can buy a product that goes in their food to make them smell better.
They almost always bite, so be quick about those rabies shots.
They like little hammocks in their cage, but will eat them from time to time.
