once dad is taken out do the fry still swim a little up to the top of the nest, and sometimes rest on the bottom?

As long as the fry aren't completely still, it should be fine. Do you have something over the tank to trap in the humidity?

Once the dad is taken out??!! You don't take out the father until the fry are free swimming, eating on their own and big enough to look like tadpoles. If they are resting on the bottom they are dieing! Its the father's job to bring them back up! You didn't leave the female in there did you? She won't care for them. The male MIGHT eat some fry, but he won't if you leave the lights on.

Research fish before you breed them! Get a good betta book or a betta breedig book.
