The Ender series by Orson Scorr Card makes for a great read
The Narnia series- C.S. Lewis
The Robot series by Isaac Asimov
If you are more adventurous some of my favorites are worth wading through
Les Miserables- Victor Hugo
The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
The Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man- James Joyce
Anna Karenina- Tolstoy
*disclaimer* these last four are only inteaded for the advanced reader
In addition alot of schools publish a required reading list which is a great place to find new reading material.. hope that helps...

You don't mention your age... I'm assuming you are a young adult (or teen).
Here are some lists for you to browse.
http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/booklistsawards/bestbooksya/06topten.htm This one has 2006's top ten best books.
http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/booklistsawards/alexawards/alex06.htm This is the list of top ten books that won the ALEX Award.
http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/yalsa.htm This is the link where you can get all kinds of great reading lists... it's a sub-branch of the American Library Association.
Some of my personal faves (though most are not "new"):
The entire Lord of the Rings Trilogy, by J.R.R. Tolkien
To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
The Freedom Writier's Diary, by Erin Gruwell (true)
The View From Saturday, by E.L. Konigsburg
Where the Lilies Bloom, by Bill and Vera Cleaver
Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls
Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse
Isaac's Storm, by Erik Larson (true)
Well, there's a few for you.... also, my sister loves the Alexander MCCall Smith Ladies No.1 Detective Agency books. They take place in Africa and there are many of these books out now.
Oh! And The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd
And don't forget the Harry Potter books... I love those, too...
Well, hope this helps some. Happy hunting!!
