how do they work? can they be made athome or gotten cheaply?

Do you mean an oxygen concentrator?

They can be bought from a medical supply company. They run about $1,000 plus or minus. They work by pulling oxygen out of the air.

PS, you can find them in the newspaper as well under medical equipment.

Well i don't know of any machines that can make oxygen. But air purifiers purify air particles.
