His costume is only primary colors, and with yellow accents and a Blue body suit, Red is also the 'S' logo, and his trunks. had he gone with a Blue cape, it would have been too much of one color, and a yellow cape would make him look like a coward. leaving Red as the only option, and since it complimented the trunks, (which are copied of Circus strongmen of the era, and used to break up teh otherwise solid blue suit) and the 'S' It works, and while it varies by source, alot of times the Cape has a solid Yellow 'S' with black on the cape as well

It’s a nice primary color that contrasts nicely with his blue longies. I suppose they could have made his bodystocking red and his cape blue. There have been plenty of heroes who have used that color scheme, and if you give m a moment, I’m sure I could even come up with a couple of them.

In one of the comic books/movie? He was wrapped in the Red and Blue material as a baby. His earth mother saved it and made his suite from it later. This question sure brought back some very old memories.

All I know is....

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim!!!!

It is the blanket that he was wrapped in when he was sent to Earth. One would think that it is a indestructible material seeing as it came from his home planet also.
