This is like asking "Ford, or Chevy?" You will get a lot of strong opinions for both sides of the aisle.

I have worked for years supporting both Macs and Windows, so I'll try to cover all the bases.

First, are you a serious computer gamer? If you are, I'd suggest buying a Windows box, although frankly, now that Macs run on Intels, you can always just run Windows on the Mac, either booted into it, or in Parallels, just for games. The reverse is NOT true, at least, not as easily. It's difficult to run MacOS on a commodity PC, and impossible to have it be stable.

If you do business with companies that are heavily invested in one platform or another, or are going into a business field that leans one way or another, look at what other people in your field are using.

For most individuals at home, it is possible to do all the tasks you need to do - office applications, music, basic video editing, email, etc, etc, etc, on either platform. Ultimately, almost anything you want to do can be done on either platform, although some businesses just seem to gravitate to one OS or the other. For example, if you're going to be doing animation or advanced CGI for Hollywood film makers, you will probably find yourself doing it on a Mac these days. A few years ago, that was more likely to be done on a $25,000 SGI workstation.

If reliability, longevity, stability (not crashing), and security are more important to you, I would recommend a Mac over Windows.

I hope that's enough basic information for you to make a decision. It might be smart to sit down with a Windows "power user" and a Mac "power user" for a few hours each and have the show you around each OS to see which you find easier and more intuitive.

Stay with Windows XP, the bugs have not been worked out yet in Vista and Leopard.

You may want to consider getting a mac, because with Boot Camp and Parallels you can boot up Windows or OSX.
