depends...I once went for 3 days without sleep...if you deprive yourself of sleep, bad things happen. Your brain starts imagining things, you start getting silly, then weepy, then just too weird...
Sometimes your body will start shutting things down, like your kidneys, liver, spleen, etc...
So don't go without sleep.....

Are you wanting to be able to stay awake or unable to sleep? If you aren't sleeping and still feel functional, you need to check with your physician as your body can break down. I was in this situation in my early thirties and what happened is that although I felt fine and kept working, my heart gave out on me. Be careful. If you go for more than a night without sleeping at all, you should check it out. Good luck.

It depends on the person mental state, they say it gets worst if unable to sleep for more than 4-5 days straight.
I guess around the world, the people who fly around are the ones needing more sleep than others, same for business and IT guys.
The sad thing (according to history) is sleep deprivation thearpy for interrgation in order for them to pull down their barriers in order to give information.

ive never really tried that before but the longest ive gone is 2 1/2 days. i stayed up that long cuz my gf called me up and said loving things to me that just wouldnt let me sleep.lol.
