You rap a beat on a drum. The artists perform a similar action with words. Before the days of modern rap, the art was sometimes more utilitarian in its function. Drums have always kept soldiers and workers in time together, as well as artists, dancers, and musicians. When you have no drum, you improvise, especially, if your hands are busy with other activities.
Also, "rap" might also be short for rapid, as in rapid speech or poetry.

rap stand for the rhythmic delivery of rhymes -- rapping -- which has obviously come to stand for what we know today as hip hop. rap existed long before hip hop, as far back as 1979, but it wasn't until the late 90s that it really took hold as fashion, popularity and a lifestyle. as with any popular cult of popularity, it is now watered down to the point that it has become more or less a parody of itself... where it is as much about commerce and making rappers millions of dollars as in the early days, when it was simply a means of expression.
the first rap song to ever reach no.1 on the billboard hot 100, ironically, was not by a black artist. it was blondie with "rapture."
