Hello Talia.
At 30 June 2006, the sex ratio of the total population for Australia was 99.1 males per 100 females.
So it is very close to fifty percent, but not quite!

I have nothing to back this up, but I'm pretty sure it goes something like this;

Overall, women form around 50% of the population.

There are more male than female births, but men (with a lower life expectancy) are more likely to die in the intervening years. This evens out the sex ratio overall. There are more elderly women than elderly men.
