If Your PC?
Go to Start
Help & Support
In the search field type "Volume" click on search or press the "Enter" key.
There should be a list of ways of checking the Volume status.
It could be as simple as "removing the check mark" off the mute in the lower right hand corner of your PC (System tray Icon : right click on it and choose to open)

Plugged in and turned on? Check the volume control in the system tray(could be muted). Itunes is a goofy program and causes my machine to hang up and do some interesting things. Reboot the machine if that isn't it.

Also check all the media players on your computer. For example, if Real Player is installed and you turn down the sound on Real Player, it will turn down the sound on your entire computer, even though the volume control registers being on. I actually thought my computer was broken for an entire month one time before I figured that one out!

Go to the device manager, rightclick the card, and select properties. That will tell you if the sound card is working, and if the drivers are installed. Might also have killed your codec. Download k-lite coded pack full {free} and that may solve it.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
